<br />
A few weeks ago I took part in a Autumn Swap organised by the lovely Ingrid of Mythologising Me. In previous years Ingrid has organised a Yuletide Swap, which has always been fun! But this year she decided to do it as a Autumn Swap, so we would all have some nice surprise post to come home to on these cold dark nights.<br />
<br />
In the swap I got a package from the total cutie Sarah and she got me loads of goodies. I loved it all but especially the Halloween nail stickers and the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Elderflowershop/" target="_blank">homemade acorn brooches</a>!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-abQLslAr37Q/VlINVEw4VtI/AAAAAAAAAEA/cYII8ts-EhE/s1600/IMG_5070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-abQLslAr37Q/VlINVEw4VtI/AAAAAAAAAEA/cYII8ts-EhE/s640/IMG_5070.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Look how pretty the package was decorated!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sv4MxIY7ESk/VlINUo53KAI/AAAAAAAAAD4/WepiBgMsRaU/s1600/IMG_5071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Sv4MxIY7ESk/VlINUo53KAI/AAAAAAAAAD4/WepiBgMsRaU/s640/IMG_5071.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was making my package for Caitlin. Although I have never met Caitlin I was given a list of her interests and some of the things she had mentioned liking were cross stitch, cats and stationery so I decided to make her some cat yarn holders and some envelopes. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRkF8uqDmMg/VlINU8uSVwI/AAAAAAAAAD8/KIAX0Bt9_hI/s1600/IMG_5089.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRkF8uqDmMg/VlINU8uSVwI/AAAAAAAAAD8/KIAX0Bt9_hI/s640/IMG_5089.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was so much fun putting this package together and knowing that it was going to brighten up someone's day. I enjoyed it so much that I have now signed up to <a href="https://www.perfectstrangers.co/">Oh Comely's Perfect Stranger Project</a>. I have received the information for the person I am putting a box together for this week so I'm excited to get started. </div>

I found the tutorial on <a href="http://www.mypapercrane.com/blog/2013/05/lets-make-cat-donuts/">My Paper Crane</a> which is actually one of my favourite websites. Everything Heidi Kenney makes is amazing!<br />
<br />
As you can see from her tutorial she has used Peanut Butter Melts to cover her donuts. That sounds like a complete dream, but sadly at the time of making these donuts I didn't know where to buy Peanut Butter Melts. I have now learnt that Hobbycraft stock a whole range of different colours and flavoured Melts, so I will know for next time. As I didn't have Melts I just decided to use melted chocolate instead and I think it worked pretty well.<br />

<br />
I would highly recommend making these, it's so easy and they look so cute. If you have any ideas for making your food look cute please let me know!<br />

Sadly this box is the last of my subscription, but I feel like it has been the best one yet! <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div>
It contained:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Kabaya Fish Gummies</li>
<li>Food Stickers</li>
<li>Moonin Mini Pouch</li>
<li>Fragrance Beans </li>
<li>Animal Greetings Card </li>
<li>Toast Squishy Charm</li>
<li>DIY Bracelet Kit </li>
<li>Alpaca Pouch </li>
<li>Egg Mini Plush </li>
<li>Caplico Mini Ice Candy</li>
</ul>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I loved everything in this box but I think my favourite thing has to be these foam food stickers. They are such good quality, I can't wait to use them! I'm also a big fan of the addition of more sweets in this month's box compared to my other two boxes. I love all novelty sweets and can't wait to try the fish gummies. I hope they're not actually fish flavoured! The same company also does just a<a href="http://www.japancandybox.com/"> sweet subscription box </a>too, which I have been tempted to try.<br />
<br />
The boxes work out about £12 each, which I think is excellent value for the amount of stuff they include and the postage is completely free. Even though this is the last box I will receive for a while I plan on renewing my subscription in the new year. I just can't resist all the Kawaii cuteness!</div>

<br />
I'm a huge of Halloween! Mainly because I absolutely love witches, so it is right up my street. I just can't resist buying all the exciting spooky themed sweets and novelty stuff in the shops.<br />
<br />
Over the last few weeks I have been trying to add a bit of the Halloween spirit into my baking. The first thing I made was a butternut squash pie with a pumpkin face. You can make any pie you like and cut what ever pumpkin face you want into the pastry. It's super easy! I cooked the pastry for the top of the pie separately and then just added it as a lid once the rest of it was cooked.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qoHQmsaRJ8Y/Vi1D_BQN9hI/AAAAAAAAAB8/7QwkTfdUvZ4/s1600/IMG_5084.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qoHQmsaRJ8Y/Vi1D_BQN9hI/AAAAAAAAAB8/7QwkTfdUvZ4/s640/IMG_5084.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Next I made witches' hat pasties. As with the pie, the filling for these can be whatever you like. I filled mine with feta, spinach and peas. I got the ideas for making these from <a href="http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2750/wizards-hat-pasties">here</a> but decided to make them look bit more like witches hats by adding a little buckle at the bottom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tq-PdtHNVRM/Vi6E4vKcTyI/AAAAAAAAACk/hgwJVWp6Ywo/s1600/IMG_5096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tq-PdtHNVRM/Vi6E4vKcTyI/AAAAAAAAACk/hgwJVWp6Ywo/s640/IMG_5096.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Lastly, I made these Bakewell tarts with spiders' web icing. I used this basic Jamie Oliver <a href="http://www.channel4.com/programmes/jamies-30-minute-meals/articles/all/jools-pasta-with-frangipane-tart-meal-recipe">recipe</a>. Although I just used the leftover pastry from my witches' hats to make the cases instead of using pre-made ones. I need to practice doing the spiders' web effect but I think you can at least get the idea. <a href="http://www.sugarhero.com/spiderweb-cupcakes/">Here</a> are the instructions from someone who has actually mastered it if you want to give it a go!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uGGBmgxZJPs/Vi6FgIIl1ZI/AAAAAAAAACs/Ftm7i4uo8UU/s1600/IMG_5107.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uGGBmgxZJPs/Vi6FgIIl1ZI/AAAAAAAAACs/Ftm7i4uo8UU/s640/IMG_5107.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I would say I am a little bit obsessed with Halloween themed baking at the moment. I have even made a <a href="https://uk.pinterest.com/smallexplorer/halloween/">Pinterest</a> board to pin all the good ideas I have seen on the internet. I'm definitely going to do some more before Saturday.<br />
<br />
Have you been baking or have you got any ideas for Halloween themed food?<br />

The collection is inspired by one of our all time favourite TV shows the X Files*. The collection consists of some large and mini temporary tattoos and three new embroidered brooches. Both the ghost and alien head have, excitingly, been embroidered using glow in the dark thread to add that extra spooky element to your outfit on these dark winter nights.<br />

It has been exactly a year and one day since we last wrote a blog post on here, oops! While we haven't been great at keeping this up to date, we have been super busy doing loads of other things. Here is a quick update of what we have been up to:<br />
<br />
- Moved house<br />
- Co-organised the first <a href="https://northwestzinefest.wordpress.com/">Northwest Zinefest</a><br />
- Got HLF funding for <a href="http://www.salfordzinelibrary.co.uk/">Salford Zine Library</a><br />
- Been on a dream holiday to Florida<br />
- Been on holiday to Copenhagen<br />
- and most recently we have launched a completely <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/YoungExplorerStuff">new spooky collection!</a><br />
<br />
Hopefully we will get a chance to do some recap posts about a few of these things that we didn't get around to writing about at the time.<br />

Whether they're books, films or TV series, we lap them all up. To celebrate our passion for detectives and amateur sleuths, we decided to put together a zine full of our favourite TV characters. It's got 16 pages of biographies and illustrations and it's been bound by hand, like all your favourite Young Explorer zines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It includes:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Jessica Fletcher from Murder, She Wrote</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Quincy</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Agent Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks (<a href="http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/oct/12/twin-peaks-return-fans-weird-america" target="_blank">Very topical</a>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sherlock Holmes</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Poirot</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Miss Marple</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dr Mark Sloan from Diagnosis Murder.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can buy it dead easily from our <a href="http://youngexplorer.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">Big Cartel shop</a>, which has been spruced up a little recently. You can have a look at our other zines while you're there too!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Who's your favourite TV detective? Have we missed out someone obvious? Let us know. It's too late to be included in Crime Zine now, but maybe we can make a Crime Zine Part Two at some point with the best of the rest!</div>

We've recently been to Brussels (by recently I mean well over a month ago now) for a weekend and had a great time. You can see another one of our little holiday videos <a href="https://vimeo.com/105866200" target="_blank">here</a>, if watching grainy footage of other people's fun is your kind of thing. One of the highlights of the trip was going to <a href="http://www.minieurope.com/" target="_blank">Mini Europe</a>, which aims to represent every EU member state in model form.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been previously but this was Liz's first opportunity to go on a tour of Europe without having to walk more than half a mile. She was pretty bowled over by the whole thing, I think. The interactive exhibits (watch the video for some examples), the plethora of amazing photo opportunities, not to mention the very friendly EU turtle mascot guy all contributed to a super fun morning. Here's some photos!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We'd definitely recommend going if you happen to find yourselves in Brussels. It's a little bit pricey and you'll probably think 'surely a badly dated miniature representation of Europe isn't worth that much' but you'd be wrong. And when you do go, make sure you have your photo taken with the mascot and buy it in key ring form. And then send us a photo of it.</div>

As we may have mentioned loads of times on this blog, we also attempt to run <a href="http://salfordzinelibrary.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank">Salford Zine Library</a> when we're not doing other things. This past weekend we were fortunate enough to host the launch of the next issue of the super great Cherry Styles' super great zine <a href="http://thechapess.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">The Chapess</a> (<a href="http://synchronisewitches.bigcartel.com/" target="_blank">buy yours now</a>). </div>
<br />
As part of the launch do, we held a little zine making workshop and here's the scanned in pages for the terrible 8 page zine called 'Hiya' that we put together in about three hours.<br />
<br />
Disclaimer: one of us was very tired and the other isn't very good at anything vaguely artistic.<br />

Here's the first one!<br />
<br />
My motto in life is that everything can be improved if you put some pompoms on it and that’s why I thought I would share this super quick and easy tutorial for making your own pompom hair band, which will brighten up any outfit.<br />
<br />
To make a pompom hair band you will need:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jr5MLG3le4A/U_RHKhX9BlI/AAAAAAAAB9E/0uSV5WZll9s/s1600/photo%2B1%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Jr5MLG3le4A/U_RHKhX9BlI/AAAAAAAAB9E/0uSV5WZll9s/s1600/photo%2B1%2Bcopy.jpg" height="265" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
1. The first thing you need to do is decide on what order you would like your pom poms to go around your hair band. I decided to just go for a random order but if you are going for a pattern it’s best to check now that you have enough of each colour before you start.<br />
<br />
2. Once you have worked out the order you then need to thread your needle with the cotton and tie a knot at the bottom. It is best to double up your cotton to make it stronger. For my cotton I picked black (the same colour as the hair band) to try and hide the stitches as much as possible.<br />
<br />
3. You then need to start to sew the pompoms on to the hair band in your prearranged order. For my hair bands I have started by sewing my first pompom on to the hair band about 6cm away from the end to allow space for the hairband to go behind my ears. <br />
<br />
4. Decide where you want your first pompom to go and then start by doing one or two stitches just into the hair band to make sure that the cotton is secured.<br />
<br />
5. Then put the needle through the middle of your first pompom and secure it in place on to the hair band. To make sure that the pompom will stay in place repeat this process two or three times. <br />
<br />
6. Once you are happy that your first pompom is attached to the hairband move on to your next pompom. With the cotton and needle stitch carefully along the hairband until you get to the place you want the next pompom to go. I have placed my pompoms right next to each other but you don’t have to.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lsCDAZ4LbmU/U_RHKwUUm_I/AAAAAAAAB9A/0qNqMoIezBs/s1600/photo%2B2%2Bcopy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lsCDAZ4LbmU/U_RHKwUUm_I/AAAAAAAAB9A/0qNqMoIezBs/s1600/photo%2B2%2Bcopy.jpg" height="287" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
7. When you are happy with the positioning of the needle add your next pompom and repeat stage 5. <br />
<br />
8. Continue in the same way sewing on each of your pompoms.<br />
<br />
9. Then, as you did at the start, stitch into the hairband only a few times to make it more secure and then neatly tie a small knot and cut the end of the thread off. I tried to hide the knot neatly behind.<br />
<br />
Then that’s it! Your pompom hair band is ready to wear!<br />
<br />

It's been about two months since we went on our <a href="http://youngexplorerzine.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/malta.html" target="_blank">holidays in Malta</a> and I'm finally getting around to posting these photos of shop fronts, mainly in Valletta. There were loads more that haven't made the cut! Let us know which ones are your favourites, please. I like Azzopardi Bros, Video Wave and Sporting Clive the best.</div>

We've recently been on holiday to Malta and thought you might like to hear all about it. Malta is a bit weird in that it is full of British people, they drive on the left and the plugs are the same. It's like a hotter version of England. We did venture out and see some very nice things, though, and rather than have me try and describe all of them, here's a video we made.<br />

while we were there, we did loads of fun things. The best thing by a mile was going to
see the new exhibition at </span><a href="http://www.prickyourfinger.com/" target="_blank">Prick Your Finger</a><span style="font-family: Calibri;">, by the super incredible and talented <a href="http://www.kandydiamond.com/" target="_blank">Kandy Diamond</a>.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5MrVVyHqx-s/U30E8Ylm7pI/AAAAAAAABb4/qHjy6_lkw7c/s1600/kandy+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-family: Calibri; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5MrVVyHqx-s/U30E8Ylm7pI/AAAAAAAABb4/qHjy6_lkw7c/s1600/kandy+2.jpg" height="400" width="395" /></a></div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The exhibition is called 'Death by Knitting' and is made up of
knitted horror film movie posters, from films that have knitting needles used
</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;">as weapons in them. Super exciting, right? But there is more! Not just are the
pieces knitted but they are also 3D!!! You get given 3D glasses to view the pieces while you are there and it really works!</span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">To accompany the exhibition there is also a zine (with a 3D
cover!) about how knitting is used in each of the films featured in the
exhibition. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">The exhibition is on until June 12</span><span style="font-size: x-small;">th</span><span style="font-family: Calibri;"> and I highly
recommend that, if you are around London before then, you take the time to go and
see the exhibition. You won’t be disappointed!</span><br />

It's called <a href="http://www.aplacecalledcommon.co.uk/category/exhibitions">'Sailing Through the Trees'</a> and we have been meaning to pop by and see it since it opened at the start of April. The poster gives you a little of taste of how good the exhibition was!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.aplacecalledcommon.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Sailing-Through-The-Trees-Poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.aplacecalledcommon.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Sailing-Through-The-Trees-Poster.jpg" height="640" width="452" /></a></div>
<br />
The illustrations in the exhibition tell the story of a wife launching a rescue mission for her fisherman husband who has somehow ended up in the belly of a whale. The series of illustrations are available to buy as prints or as part of a comic (There are prices and things up on the wall!) from behind the bar. We're very tempted. We'll probably pop back and pick up a couple of prints before the exhibition finishes at the end of September. It'd be good if we could grab a copy of the comic for Salford Zine Library, too.<br />
<br />
The exhibition is proper ace, with the two artists' work complimenting each other perfectly to tell the story. We'd definitely recommend making a trip to Common, sitting in the 'Club Room' (I think that's what they call the room at the side, anyway. <b>EDIT- it is actually called the 'Kestrel Suite'!</b>), ordering some chips and spending a bit of time enjoying the lovely exhibition. Here's a couple of photos we took while we were at the exhibition (Complete with that annoying reflection you get when you take photos of things behind glass):<br />

<br />
The point to take home from this blog post is that you should definitely go and see 'Sailing Through the Trees' at your earliest possible convenience. Okay!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06832937174499922092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5072063781194318609.post-61832111508443532012014-04-15T21:58:00.005+01:002014-04-15T21:59:14.594+01:00Wirral TourEver since forever ago I've wanted to visit Port Sunlight, the model village built by the Lever Brothers in the Wirral. This weekend I finally made it there and it was every bit as amazing as I was hoping it would be. You can read more about the history of Port Sunlight <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Sunlight">here</a>. If it wasn't dead inconveniently located for work and things, I'd move to Port Sunlight for sure. Every single house in the village is beautiful in its own way. Phwoar! Go and have a look if you get the chance.<br />
<br />
While we were in the area, Liz's mum and dad took us on a tour of the Wirral, which was much more exciting than it sounds. I made a little video* of some of the things we saw as we were making our way along the coast. First we're in Port Sunlight, then <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkgate,_Cheshire">Parkgate</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Kirby">West Kirby</a>, and then a bit of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoylake">Hoylake</a> before we went back through the Birkenhead Tunnel and back to Liverpool and then eventually back home to Manchester. Here's the video! Tell us what your favourite bit of the Wirral is, please. We very much enjoyed our day out on the peninsula.<br />

*video features the track 'Secret Forever' by Haiku Salut from their lovely EP <a href="http://haikusalut.bandcamp.com/album/how-we-got-along-after-the-yarn-bomb">'How We Got Along After The Yarn Bomb'</a>. Buy it!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06832937174499922092noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5072063781194318609.post-43947055722097097412014-03-05T14:38:00.000+00:002014-03-05T14:38:34.315+00:00Bird in Borrowed FeathersHi everyone, are you alright? I am off sick from work so I'm taking this opportunity, between coughing, sneezing and wiping my nose, to write a little blog post. Sorry it's been so long since the last one! A lot has happened since February 9th. The new issue of <a href="http://youngexplorer.bigcartel.com/product/young-explorer-issue-4-the-past">Young Explorer</a> came back from the printers for a start (<a href="http://youngexplorer.bigcartel.com/product/young-explorer-issue-4-the-past">BUY A COPY NOW</a>).<br />
<br />
That's all very exciting and everything, but I want to talk to you about Nottingham today. Do you live in Nottingham? Do you live near Nottingham? Are you going to be popping to Nottingham for a day out any time soon? If so, we'd totally recommend visiting <a href="http://www.borrowed-feathers.com/">Bird in Borrowed Feathers</a>. They've been stocking some of <a href="http://birdinborrowedfeathers.bigcartel.com/artist/young-explorer">our stuff</a><span id="goog_1861768141"></span><span id="goog_1861768142"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a> for a few months now and it looks like a lovely little shop. We wanted to get to know Hannah and Georgie from the shop a little bit better, so we asked if they could send us a little biography of themselves and the shop for us to put on the blog. And here's what they sent back!<br />

Have you ever had a really good idea for something you would
like to have made but then
realised you probably couldn’t make it yourself? Then why not ask Young
Explorer! Over the last year we have been making lots of custom made items, but for
some reason we never got around to blogging about them. Here are some of our favourite examples of custom things we
have made:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a45pXVEIBOw/Uve_5Kd7dRI/AAAAAAAABPc/RhebfPEdfC4/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a45pXVEIBOw/Uve_5Kd7dRI/AAAAAAAABPc/RhebfPEdfC4/s1600/photo+3.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The first custom order we ever made was two embroidered
brooches - one, a rasher of bacon and the other, a floret of broccoli. These brooches
were made to give as wedding presents as the bride was a
vegetarian and the groom a dedicated meat eater.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-brQ8gjJCdLQ/Uve_5rghfVI/AAAAAAAABPo/FImiGyLCyeo/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 15px;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-brQ8gjJCdLQ/Uve_5rghfVI/AAAAAAAABPo/FImiGyLCyeo/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="http://brianorndorf.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54ee7b642883301630639a44d970d-500wi" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 0px;"><img border="0" src="http://brianorndorf.typepad.com/.a/6a00e54ee7b642883301630639a44d970d-500wi" height="194" width="300" /></a>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Another custom order/request we have made was for a brooch
and an iron-on patch,<a href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5072063781194318609" name="_GoBack"></a> based on the Khaki Scouts patch
from the amazing Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom, for a regular customer from America.<br />
<br />
Then, lastly, we made this Oyster card holder with an embroidery of our favourite <a href="https://twitter.com/posipossum">Positive Possum</a> on.</div>
<div style="padding: 2px; text-align: left;">

Happy new year and all that. It's been a while since we posted anything, but one of our new years resolutions for 2014 is to post on here more often. So here we are posting about what a lovely time we had when we went to Windermere at the weekend.<br />
<br />
We thought we'd take advantage of the fact that the Lake District would be relatively quiet at this time of the year and hopped on a train to Windermere. We stayed at a hotel called the <a href="http://englishlakes.co.uk/hotels/lake-district-hotels/windermere-hotels/wild-boar-inn/">Wild Boar</a>, which has its own smoke house. We both enjoy eating anything that's been smoked so it seemed like the place for us. Anyway, smoked food aside, we did loads of nice things like: walk, talk, eat, look at <a href="http://www.hop-skip-jump.com/">Beatrix Potter stuff</a>, walk, get on a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_ferry">chain ferry</a> (The best kind of ferry) and stuff like that.<br />
<br />
Here's a video that I recorded with my <a href="http://philipbloom.net/2009/11/08/lo-fi-heaven-digital-harinezumi-digital-super-8mm-camera/">Digital Harinezumi camera</a> that I got off Liz for Christmas. It records silent video footage with a kind of vaguely super 8 style aesthetic. Or something like that. The song playing while you watch thrilling footage of us doing things in the Lake District is Young Explorer by the Middle Ones. It's the song we named our zine/blog/corporate brand after! The Middle Ones have a <a href="http://discounthorse.limitedrun.com/products/522898">split release with Best Friends Forever</a> coming out soon and you should buy it. Okay, play the film!<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div align="center">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="375" mozallowfullscreen="" src="//player.vimeo.com/video/83586804" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe> <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
And in case the moving images weren't enough, here's a collage of still photos from our little trip that I put together on Photoshop with my new found Photoshop skills.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RWycwQJbxxY/UswtRn36aAI/AAAAAAAABKg/hmOYuF6eAMk/s1600/windermere.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RWycwQJbxxY/UswtRn36aAI/AAAAAAAABKg/hmOYuF6eAMk/s1600/windermere.jpg" height="400" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
To summarise, Windermere is very nice. It was mainly cold and dry and then cold and wet, but that's okay. What's your favourite place to visit for a weekend? Let us know!</div>

As it's December, we've decided to do another one of our Etsy treasury lists. This time it's chock full of ideas for Christmas presents that you should definitely get for people that you like. You can have a look at all the amazing things by clicking <a href="https://www.etsy.com/treasury/MTkyNzU0Mzd8MjcyMjc5NTMyNQ/christmas-picks">here</a>, or even on the image below if that's your kind of thing (Ps. I have never used Photoshop and this image is the result of about an hour's worth of fiddling).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/treasury/MTkyNzU0Mzd8MjcyMjc5NTMyNQ/christmas-picks"><img border="0" height="626" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CpH6bs0Igik/Up3zscYz0hI/AAAAAAAABIY/Vs4SIyxAtQ4/s640/etsy+list.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Etsy is the best place to buy presents. I'm sure all the people you buy for would prefer to get something handmade and nice from Etsy rather than another Amazon voucher. You can even <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YoungExplorerStuff">buy stuff from us</a>, if you like!<br />
<br />
Tell us about your favourite Etsy shops for buying pressies, please! Tweet us, Facebook us, leave a comment, whatever! And most importantly, have a very Merry Christmas!!!<br />

Apologies for our absence from the "blogosphere" of late, we have been a little bit busy working on a number of things that have been pleasant but time consuming. We'll be back to normal soon but thought we'd check in and update you on some exciting* news.<br />
<br />
<b>The Swapsies</b><br />
<div>
The best pop folk band Liverpool has to offer have just released their new EP which is accompanied by a neat little zine that us two made especially. The EP is called 'Sparrows' and the zine we did is called 'Feathered Migrants. It's based on the lyrics of the Swapsies song of the same name. Andy from the Swapsies has written all about our little collaboration on his blog, <a href="http://alovelypool.wordpress.com/2013/12/01/sparrows-and-swapsies/">so you should read that</a>. The EP is great so you should definitely <a href="http://theswapsies.bandcamp.com/album/sparrows-ep">buy it</a>. You can also buy it from us <a href="http://youngexplorer.bigcartel.com/product/the-swapsies-sparrows-ep-and-zine">here</a>. There's going to be a launch party in Liverpool on December 12th and you can find out all about that buy clicking <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/696259787066069/?fref=ts">here</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://theswapsies.bandcamp.com/merch"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://f0.bcbits.com/img/a1259146640_2.jpg" width="400" /></a><span id="goog_473347116"></span><span id="goog_473347117"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Young Explorer Etsy shop</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've been busy updating our Etsy shop recently and now you can buy even more great stuff for yourself or for people you like (Note! If you are buying Christmas pressies, make sure you place your order in good time so we're able to get the stuff to you before the big day). You might have noticed that the photos on our Etsy page are quite nice now, and that's thanks to the wonderful <a href="http://www.ellebrotherhood.com/">Elle Brotherhood</a> who did them for us.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/YoungExplorerStuff"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AGy9-k8bERU/Upuk5P8dOaI/AAAAAAAABIE/CiWaC4LtmNg/s640/etsyphotothingyhahaha.JPG" width="626" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In other news, we'll also be selling things at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/593494334042736/">Liverpool Winter Arts </a>Market on Saturday December 7th too! You should come, it'll be great. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, that will do for now. We'll be posting more from now on, I promise! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
*depends on how easily excited you are</div>

We also took some Young Explorer stuff to flog on the side, too.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Salford Zine Library out of a suitcase</td></tr>

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://distilleryimage10.ak.instagram.com/0a00948843b011e3936922000ae8032e_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://distilleryimage10.ak.instagram.com/0a00948843b011e3936922000ae8032e_8.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Some of our stuff</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We sold a few of our new mini zines - we have one about whales called 'Whale of a time!' and one called 'Feathered Migrants', which was inspired by a song by ace Liverpool pop band <a href="http://theswapsies.bandcamp.com/">The Swapsies</a> (More about both of these new things another time!).<br />
<br />
There was loads of interest in the zine library and we had some lovely donations from other stallholders, too, which was ace. Keep your eye on the <a href="http://salfordzinelibrary.blogspot.co.uk/">Salford Zine Library blog</a> or pop in some time during the week to have a look at them.<br />
<br />
All in all, it was a pretty fun day. The event was very well organised and everyone who came along was very friendly and nice and stuff. There was a zine making workshop on after the fair and, though we didn't go, it was guaranteed to be flipping great. Hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did!<br />
<br />
See yer,<br />

<br />
<a href="http://theskyliner.org/">Skyliner</a> has been one of our favourite blogs for ages and ages. It appeals to our curious nature, is dead nice to look at, is wonderfully written and the articles usually include some pretty nice photos too. What more could you want? Hayley has recently written about the <a href="http://theskyliner.org/post/65360979224/theme-park-field-trip-part-ii">abandoned theme park in Berlin</a> that <a href="http://youngexplorerzine.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/brrrrlin.html">we mentioned a few months ago</a>, only her's is in more detail and has much better photos!<br />
<br />
Hayley also does <a href="http://skyliner.bigcartel.com/category/tour">amazing guided tours</a> of architecture in Manchester, and now you can buy your building obsessed loved one a gift voucher so they can choose which one to go on themselves. We want to go on the 'alternative countryside' one quite a lot. Anyway, our Liz was asked to provide an illustration for the gift voucher and there it is, poking out from behind the badges above. Nice innit?<br />
<br />
It's a drawing of a building on Portland Street that Hayley has kindly written about for the next issue of <a href="http://youngexplorer.bigcartel.com/">Young Explorer</a>, which is going to be about 'the past' and will be ready very soon we hope. Now stop reading this blog and go and spend the next few hours reading Skyliner instead.<br />
<br />
See yer!<br />

This blog post is going to be all about dogs, so sorry if you're one of them people who say daft things like "Actually, I prefer cats" or (even more daft) "I don't like the idea of having a pet at all". This blog post is not for you. If you do like dogs, you should follow my (Steve!) <a href="http://instagram.com/hiya_steve">Instagram</a> profile, which is made up primarily of candid photos of strangers' dogs.<br />
<br />
At the weekend we had a pretty dog-tastic time, all in all. We went to the television's <a href="http://www.battersea.org.uk/">Battersea Dogs Home</a>. You can pay £2 to get in without having to agree to adopt anything, so it was kind of like visiting a zoo that only has dogs (and cats). We weren't allowed to take pictures, but here's one I took before I realised:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://distilleryimage1.ak.instagram.com/f8a0f6ac34fe11e3968a22000a1fc517_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://distilleryimage1.ak.instagram.com/f8a0f6ac34fe11e3968a22000a1fc517_8.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There were so many amazing dogs. Our favourites were Jacob, Frankie and Wilma. If you're in a position to adopt a dog, you should definitely consider rehoming an abandoned one. Here's Wilma's photo from the <a href="http://www.battersea.org.uk/applications/dynamic/?id=24296&filter_breed=generalanimalinformation_root.dogbreeds.Lurcher&filter_size=&filter_gender=&filter_centre=&filter_ages=&filter_livedogs=&">Battersea Dogs Home website</a>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.battersea.org.uk/images/animallarge/30588_Wilma.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.battersea.org.uk/images/animallarge/30588_Wilma.jpg" /></a></div>
Awwww! After we'd spent ages walking around and looking at the dogs and cats, we popped down the road to the the <a href="http://www.thegalleryonthecorner.com/">Gallery on the Corner</a>, who currently have an exhibition of dog art (art by dogs) on until October 20th. Here's a <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2458863/Gallery-Corner-Dog-art-exhibition-raise-money-Battersea-Dogs-Cats-home.html">Daily Mail article</a> about it, complete with humourless idiots underneath the line saying things like:
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
"This is not ART. To call it art is to belittle true artists with talent. Animals can't make art as they haev no concept of painting/drawing for any other reason than reward. Of Course, as i mention in my comments on the Bankys article..some fool will pay stupid money and they will become worth thousands... great for Dogs home...depressing for Art"</blockquote>
Get a grip, mate! It involves dogs so is a good thing! Proceeds from the exhibition go to the dogs home, too, so that's even better. Here's a picture of the sausage dog that was trotting around the exhibition space. I think he might have belonged to the staff at the gallery:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://distilleryimage8.ak.instagram.com/cc817ee4340311e3895f22000a9e4895_8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://distilleryimage8.ak.instagram.com/cc817ee4340311e3895f22000a9e4895_8.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, in other dog related news, the super amazing <a href="http://discounthorse.limitedrun.com/">Discount Horse</a> are releasing the even more amazing All Dogs' split with Slouch. It is one of the best things I have heard this year and you should <a href="http://discounthorse.limitedrun.com/products/519400-all-dogs-slouch-split-cassette">definitely buy it</a>.</div>
<br />

But this year the lineup is even better than usual! We're so excited about it that we thought we'd better write something about the five bands/artists we're most looking forward to seeing this weekend. Here they are, in no particular order:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d9KHjFoOVOQ/UN86aoORjeI/AAAAAAAAAc4/pLm9pTqXTQo/s640/nedm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d9KHjFoOVOQ/UN86aoORjeI/AAAAAAAAAc4/pLm9pTqXTQo/s320/nedm.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="http://matriviere.bandcamp.com/"><b>Mat Riviere</b></a><br />
Obvs! We've already told you <a href="http://youngexplorerzine.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/not-even-doom-music.html">how great his most recent 10"</a> is, so it's almost inevitable that we'd be really jazzed about seeing him at Carefully Planned. That's not all, though: he's playing at <a href="http://bakerie.co.uk/this-is">Bakerie</a> wine store, the fancy bread (and wine) place next to the fancy pie place. Jackpot! I'm going to be stuffing my face with still-warm focaccia while he does his thing.<br />
(Saturday @ Bakerie) <br />
<br />
<a href="http://onsind.bandcamp.com/"><b>ONSIND</b></a><br />
Either we really like bread (and wine) or Bakerie is just the place to be on Saturday. Actually, it's both. But straight after Mat Riviere's done, you can stick around and see ONSIND. Acoustic pop punk from Durham, featuring people from <a href="http://marthadiy.bandcamp.com/">Martha</a>.<br />
(Saturday @ Bakerie) <br />
<br />
<b>Well Weezer</b><br />
It's Well Wisher doing Weezer covers, obviously. And it's in the swanky new room upstairs at the newly refurbished Gullivers. Can't blumming wait!<br />
(Saturday @ Gullivers)<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://goodgriefliverpool.bandcamp.com/">Good Grief</a></b><br />
Excellent noisy pop fun from Liverpool. I have never seen them irl before but am pretty sure it'll be ace.<br />
(Sunday @ Gullivers)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://johnnyforeigner.bandcamp.com/"><b>Johnny Foreigner</b></a><br />
Unlike Good Grief, I have seen Johnny Foreigner lots of times, although I think the last time was probably about three years ago. Dead frenetic pop-punk that will be a joy to get re-acquainted with.Yeah!!!<br />
(Sunday @ Soup Kitchen)<b></b><br />
<b><br /></b>
There's loads of other super duper bands (Honourable mention to It Hugs Back who did one of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-sYIa5oYtE">my favourite songs ever</a>) playing over the weekend, too. You can get all the information from the <a href="http://acpfestival.wordpress.com/">Carefully Planned website</a> and there are still a few tickets left (You can get them from the website 'n all).<br />
<br />
<b>Competition time!</b><br />
Would you and someone you know/love like to go to the festival this weekend? Well, have we got a prize for you. £12.50's worth of prime festival admission (more on the door) for the whole weekend for you and A.N Other. All you have to do is Tweet something like: "I would like to enter the @_YoungExplorer competition to win tickets for <complete id="goog_1729128587">@</complete>ACPFestival, please!". Or comment on this post with a way for us to contact you if you win. The winner will be announced on Thursday! Good luck everyone!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06832937174499922092noreply@blogger.com0
